Proposed update of mandatory safety standards for children’s magnetic toys-Australia

In order to further improve the safety standards of the children's toy industry, it is understood that Australia proposes to update the safety standards of magnet toys! The promulgation and implementation of each standard is for the safety of the market and consumer audiences. Even if there is a lot of resistance in implementation, we must implement it in order to purify market insecurity factors. On May 18, 2020, the WTO issued a notice document 'Review of Mandatory Safety Standards for Children’s Toys-Consultation Document' on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s proposal to update the mandatory safety standards for children’s magnetic toys so that the supplier’s products comply with any of the following extensive Voluntary standards adopted: • International standards (ISO 8124-1:2018 Toy Safety Part 1: Physical and Mechanical Safety Performance) • European Standards (EN71-1:2014+A1:2018 Toy Safety Part 1: Physical and Mechanical Performance) • American Standard (ASTM F963-17 Consumer Product Safety Specification-Toy Safety)•Australia/New Zealand Standard (AS/NZS 8124-1:2019 Toy Safety Part 1: Physical and Mechanical Safety Performance, which is the international standard adopted locally) except No requirements will be imposed beyond those contained in these standards. Allowing compliance with these standards will reduce the supplier’s current regulatory complexity and duplication, thereby reducing technical barriers to trade. Although these standards have similar requirements to the current mandatory safety standards, the committee aims to reduce the risk to consumers by restricting the scope of toys that are allowed to be supplied with small, high-strength magnets that are already loose. Final date for comments: within 60 days after the announcement. Planned date of adoption: Any proposed amendments to the safety standards will be adopted the first day after its registration. Planned implementation date: The proposed safety standard will provide a transition period (usually 12 months) to enable suppliers to adapt to the new requirements. During the transition period, suppliers can choose to comply with the requirements specified in the new standards or current safety standards.
